Installing and updates

Your operating system decides what is installed on your device, and RSX software works within that. Here is what each system will ask of you, and how a newer release reaches you.

01

Channels

Stable
The release RSX recommends. Download links default to it.
Beta
A preview of the next release, labelled Beta wherever it appears.
Canary
The newest reviewed build, for testing. It may be incomplete.

Every release, on any channel, is reviewed and signed before it appears here. A release found to be unsafe or broken is revoked: it stops being offered at once, and its page says why.

02

Windows 11

MSIX package

  1. Open the downloaded .msix file. Windows App Installer shows the app, its publisher and what it may access.
  2. Check the publisher is the one on the release page, then choose Install.

An MSIX package is installed for your account and removed from Settings, Apps. A newer release is installed the same way, over the old one. Windows will not install a package signed by a different publisher over it.

Installer (.exe)

  1. Open the downloaded .exe. Windows shows a User Account Control prompt naming the verified publisher.
  2. If the publisher is missing or not the one you expect, choose No.

How an installer updates itself depends on the application; its own documentation says. RSX does not install anything on Windows without that prompt.

If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warns about a new download, read what it says. Do not switch SmartScreen or any other protection off to install RSX software; if it blocks the file, tell us on Discord instead.

03

Debian 13

  1. Check the download (Verify a download).
  2. Install it with apt, giving the path so apt reads the file rather than a repository:
    Shell
    sudo apt install ./<file>.deb
  3. apt lists anything else it needs to install. Read the list before you agree.

Updates do not arrive through apt. A downloaded package is not an APT repository, so apt upgrade will not find a newer release. Download the newer package from this site and install it the same way. If RSX publishes a signed APT repository later, this page will say how to add it.

The packages are built for Debian 13 on amd64. Other distributions based on Debian may install them; RSX tests only Debian 13.

04

Android 16

  1. Download the APK in your browser, then open it from the download notification or the Files app.
  2. Android asks whether that app (your browser, or Files) may install unknown apps. Allowing it applies to that one app; you can turn it off again afterwards in Settings.
  3. Android shows the application's name and asks you to install. Check the name, then confirm.

Updates are installed the same way: download the newer APK from this site and open it. Android installs it over the existing app only if it is signed with the same certificate, which every RSX release is. Nothing is installed in the background, and RSX applications cannot update themselves without your confirmation.

Some manufacturers add their own steps. Xiaomi HyperOS, for example, may scan the file and ask you to wait or to confirm again. Those prompts come from the phone, not from RSX; read them as you would any other. Do not turn off Google Play Protect or a manufacturer's security scan to install RSX software.
